Which Smartphone Brand is the most Responsible and Eco-Friendly ?

Environmental degradation is a concern that companies face a tough time handling. As a result, they are searching for solutions that can help them continue their operations without harming the planet and its ecological structure.

In this regard, the electronic industry, especially the smartphone makers, is becoming more conscious as various raw materials that they use can have a larger impact on the environment if not handled properly.

The most environmentally friendly smartphones in the world

The testing parameters

To determine the best green refurbished or used mobile phones among the lot, we analysed several leading smartphones on various specification criteria. These include:

  • Energy consumption

  • Eco-friendly packaging

  • Incorporation of recycled materials

  • Power-saving capabilities

With the help of these parameters, we will be testing three leading brands, the Apple iPhone, Samsung and Motorola, both for new and used mobile phones

Apple iPhones

Apple has been making its phone manufacturing process greener every year, instituting several green initiatives when it releases a new iPhone. The iPhone 14 Pro is considered to be the most environmentally friendly, responsible and greenest model by the company. Apple's Product Environmental Report says that two of its phones, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro use many recycled metals and materials while manufacturing the phones. Almost all of the phones are made up of recycled tungsten approximately (99%) and recycled rare earth elements like Germanium and Indium (approximately 98%). The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 used 100% certified recycled gold when they were plating the main logic board.

Energy usage is another huge factor that also makes it eco-friendly. The iPhone 14 Pro consumes 54% less energy as compared to all other smartphone manufacturers. The battery charger systems are also very efficient. The battery charger has a 69 kg carbon footprint during its entire life cycle. We are considering the carbon emissions from production to recycling. When you compare it to other iPhone models, it is 11% less than the iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro. Even second-hand iPhones fall true to all these parameters.

Samsung Phones: S Series

The Samsung Galaxy S Series is the greenest among the other companies. The Samsung S22 series has the most excellent specifications, and it is the most energy-efficient and eco-friendly phone series. Samsung has been in the process of going green for a long time now, and the S22 series is the result of it.

It is one of the most environmentally conscious devices ever globally. It contains ocean-bound plastic. Around 20% of the plastic used in the phone is made of recycled material, and Samsung also includes recycled material post-consumer usage. The speaker and the other inner parts that regulate the volume and power keys are all recycled materials.

The smartphone packaging is also sustainable. Samsung claims the paper and cardboard packaging uses 100% recycled paper. The protective plastic film that you find on the package box is also made from plastic that has been recycled. Samsung also has an environmental program called Galaxy for the Planet. This program includes multiple plans for using recycled material in the new products in its mobile and smartphone product segment. Samsung is even trying to discard all types of plastics used in the packaging of mobiles. This way, they are trying to achieve zero landfill waste targets by 2025.

Motorola Edge Series

Lenovo, the parent company of Motorola, has an ambitious plan for making the Motorola Edge series one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly brands ever. It had taken a 10-year climate pledge two years ago, back in 2020, to make its products sustainable. The first step they have taken in this regard is that they have made the entire mobile device range 100% free from PVC. PVC, an acronym for Poly Vinyl Chloride, is a plastic polymer that is not completely biodegradable and hence detrimental to the environment. They have also stopped using BFR (Brominated Flame Retardants, mixtures for making the phone fire-proof). The phone batteries also do not have any toxic materials like cadmium or mercury. The company also uses 100% recycled pulp content for the packaging, which helps minimise the use of plastics.

Apart from the top OEMs, many small retailers, especially in the pre-owned smartphone segment, are also playing a key role in reducing e-waste. Organisations like Mobex are implementing a green and sustainable process of selling refurbished smartphones that deal with these environmental issues and enabling you to enjoy the flagship phones at a reduced rate.
